Sorrento - Capri Boat Trip
A Photo Essay
We started early morning from Nocelle to Sorrento. Our B&B, Casa Cuccaro arranged for a cab. The Mercedes was super-cool, our driver was cooler than his car. That day was the day of meeting many Indophiles. The driver on finding that we were from India wished us 'Namaste'. He even boasted of knowing one or two words in Hindi like 'Aloo' (potato). We had a chat on his adventures in the Himalayas. The route was narrow and scary but the views are worth dying for.
Sorrento was abuzz with tourists. We had just a day in Sorrento and had booked a hotel called Maison Tofani right in the city centre. Sorrento was no different from Amalfi or Positano except for its bigger size.
Our hotel arranged for a boat trip to Capri in just five minutes notice. The boat company is called Mediterranean Blu Services, based in Naples. The boat owner Andrea was another Indophile we met; he was enchanted by India's natural beauty, culture and economic growth. We wanted to hire a separate boat for us but the cost came almost up to our entire trip's budget, so we took a shared boat. There were two elderly English couples—very friendly and talkative. And there was one not-so-friendly American couple.
Andrea offered us seats on the front side of the boat and it was as good as being on a separate boat. The place was romantic and we had an excellent time. The boat trip was a round trip around the Capri Island for a whole day for 140 euros per head. Andrea provided sandwiches for lunch and some refreshment drinks en route (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
We have never been on a boat trip in the sea and this was a unique experience. However I did feel a little nauseated in between. Our boat was a slow boat and the heat made me even more uncomfortable. The changing colors of the sea and the lush cliffs around were simply worth all the trouble.
The boat was docked in a small Marina of the Capri Island. We had three hours to visit the town by climbing stairs; a bus was also available. Thanks to the Walk of the Gods, we were already in pain and our legs refused to climb even the shortest of the stairs. As per Andrea's recommendation, we went to a restaurant and had some mussels. The food was great but the rude waiter spoiled our experience.
The beach was full of people. We did not feel like finding a place among the crowd, so we sat on a quiet shady corner and enjoyed the scenery. The return trip was uneventful, just made me more nauseous.
Apart from the beauty of the sea, the most rememberable parts of the trip were the warm English couples and Andrea—they made our trip special. I believe when Andrea comes to India, he too will find India special.
