Vibrant, Crowded and Beautiful
We went for a day trip to
Positano and Amalfi from Nocelle. After an hour of walking the stairs
from Nocelle, we reached Arienzo. From Arienzo, we walked along the
road to reach Positano. It was not an easy walk but the incomparable
views made it worthwhile.

Positano |
Positano
Positano is a colorful town
with vibrant shopping scene and cheerful tourist crowd. The roads
were well maintained and narrow, lined with a variety of shops. The
ceramic shops are worth checking. The shore was again lined with
shops and restaurants.

A Restaurant along the Beach |
We walked along the alleys
to reach Spaggia Grande, the main beach of Positano. The pebbly beach
was dotted with sunbathing people; the azure sea was lined with boats
and ferries.
|
The Beach |
We decided head to Amalfi
and bought tickets for the ferry which was not available for a couple
of hours. My husband decided to take a dip in the clear waters. We
bought a nice beach towel with Positano written on it as a souvenir,
not really wanting to get our home-bought white towels dirty.
|
Relaxing in the Waters |
The water was pleasant for
the Italian heat. It was the beginning of October but the heat was
still on. We played in the sea glancing over the abundant fishes,
occasional scuba divers and boats. We easily lost the two hours in
sea and had rush to catch the ferry.
|
The Ferry Port |
The ferry trip was fun
except for the sun. The gentle swaying motion was pleasant enough
that I never felt nauseated. The villages stacked neatly on the
cliffs were simply a visual treat. The greenery, the skies and the
sea together made a unique picture; the scenery was changing every
minute. Among the cacophony of many languages, we listened to the
gentle rush of waves and whizzing breeze.

Amalfi
Amalfi
was similar to Positano but less crowded and not so vibrant. There
were high-class restaurants serving fresh sea foods.
|
Amalfi |
We had lunch in
a restaurant right next to the Amalfi Cathedral. The juices and food
were fresh and exotic.

The Clams and Shrimp Spaghetti |
We had
only a couple of hours before our last ferry to Positano. We decided
to explore the town as the cathedral was heavily crowded. The streets
were all the same in the towns of the Amalfi Coast: devious, narrow
and kaleidoscopic.
|
The Streets |
|
The Spices |
The
street scene was much more interesting in Amalfi. The colorful
ceramic shops had a variety of items on display: bells, wine-corks,
cups, shot glasses, fridge magnets and showpieces. We bought some
ceramic stuffs here as we found it little cheaper than Positano. The
local lemon drink, limoncello was ubiquitous throughout the town. The
kitschy bottles in which they are sold are worth a special mention.
|
The Small Fountain |
The
narrow road led to a small fountain which had cute figures. We spent
some time strolling in the streets.

Monterpertuso View along the Drive to Nocelle |
After a bit of shopping (again),
we got our ferry back to Positano and just lost our bus to Nocelle.
The frequency of buses to Nocelle is a couple of hours. So, we took a
taxi for a steep forty euros.
